Information and Communication Technology Overview

Within the ICT department at Penkford, our aim is for all students to enjoy their ICT learning experience. We want students to be able to utilise the range of IT technology equipment and resources in order to be able to develop their ICT skills, whilst having fun and gaining transferable skills that are relevant to their own lives and experiences.

ICT is a dynamic and ever changing subject that opens up many different future pathways for students to follow. The subject content will stay with students throughout their lives.

Key Stage 3

All students in Year 7 and 8 follow the National Curriculum for Information and Communication Technology. During Key Stage 3, students become increasingly independent users of ICT tools and information sources. They gain a better understanding of how ICT can help their work in other subjects and develop their ability to judge when and how to use ICT. They become more focused, efficient and rigorous in their use of ICT, and carry out a range of increasingly complex tasks. Much of the work pursued in ICT lessons links closely with other curriculum areas in the school.

Examples of topics learnt in Key Stage 3:

  • Spreadsheets
  • Flatfile Databases
  • Presentations
  • Email
  • Graphics

Key Stage 4

Students in Years 9 through to 11 work towards gaining their OCR Entry Level certificate and Functional Skills ICT up to Level 2.

We encourage pupils in Key Stage 4 to become more responsible for choosing and using ICT tools and information sources. We aim for them to use a wide range of ICT applications confidently and effectively. The use of the interactive whiteboard and projector in the ICT suite has enhanced the pupils’ learning experience.
