Reading and Literacy
Reading is a priority at Penkford School. We know that improving our reading has an impact on our success in qualifications and also our quality of life once we leave school. Pupils are given the opportunity to read for pleasure during every school day.
Through reading, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. We aim to expose our pupils to a wide range of interesting vocabulary, which provides our pupils with the foundations to understand and take interest in the world around them as they grow.
Literature, especially, plays a key role in such development. Reading enables pupils both to acquire knowledge and to build on what they already know. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society and being prepared to enter the work place.
Key Stage 2
When pupils join us at Penkford we assess their understanding of phonics. If we need to support pupils with this, they receive intervention and support.
Pupils are read to regularly and are given the opportunity to read on a 1:1 basis with a Learning Mentor at least once per week.
We have recently purchased a new reading scheme, ‘Oxford Reading Tree: Project X’. These books are specifically written for reluctant male readers.
Pupils in Key Stage 2 have helped to transform a room into a space-themed Project X pod, which is a quiet room for reading, interventions and the teaching of phonics. Pupils are very proud of their special room.
Key Stages 3 and 4
At Key Stages 3 and 4, pupils are given the opportunity to read during the 30 minute form time every morning. Pupils are encouraged to read a variety of texts, including digital texts.
New texts are purchased regularly for Key Stages 3 and 4 in consultation with pupils who request books that they are interested in reading.
We are currently in the process of embedding the ‘Accelerated Reader’ programme throughout the school. This supports us to ensure pupils engage with texts at the correct level for them. Where they need additional support with reading comprehension and reading for meaning we put help in place.
The culture at our school encourages a love of reading. We enjoy World Book Day and events which celebrate reading in school. We also encourage parents and guardians to be involved so they are part of our reading community too!
